Smart vacuum… we like the sound of that. It’s a phrase coined in a recent article by Fast Company. Tech journalist Luke Dormehl sat down with founder Nick Grey to talk about how the AirRam came to be.
“Vacuum cleaners have stayed almost completely unchanged for years… Although people have changed superficial things about the design, in about 100 years they’ve not really drastically rethought the concept. We have.” – Nick Grey, Gtech Founder
The two discussed Grey’s early years and desire to go out on his own, then came that “Eureka!” moment when Nick and his designers realized they are on to something big.
“There was a defining moment when we tested the very first prototype, it actually picked up more dirt than a mains-powered product. To confirm this we rushed out and purchased two of the latest vacuum cleaners from the two leading U.K. brands, and tested the prototype against these using the International standard for testing vacuum cleaner performance. Again we outperformed both–we really did have a cordless vacuum cleaner that performed as well as a corded (one.)” Paul Pickford, AirRam Technical Director.
Dormehl is one of the first to point out that the AirRam is not only revolutionary, but contains an industry first.
“The device features a world first in the form of an onboard computer, which lets you quantify your cleaning experience.” – Luke Dormehl, Fast Company
He’s talking, of course, about the AirRam’s data bridge which connects to your computer, allowing you to track energy savings and calories burned, check the battery, find cleaning and usage information, and set different suction power/battery life modes. In the end, Dormehl summed it up well, we think!
“In the case of Grey and the AirRAM, the vacuum seems to be an unequivocal step forward. Using the device gives you the same sense that accompanies all genuine breakthroughs: that it is difficult to imagine that all products in this category won’t one day work like this.” – Dormehl
